Guardians Trade Cy Young Winner to Blue Jays at MLB Trade Deadline

CLEVELAND — Shane Bieber is heading north.
The Cleveland Guardians have traded the former Cy Young winner to the Toronto Blue Jays, per MLB insiders. The deal comes just hours before the 2025 MLB trade deadline.
In return, the Guardians receive pitching prospect Khal Stephen.
Bieber, 30, has spent his entire career with Cleveland. He debuted in 2018 and won the AL Cy Young Award in the shortened 2020 season. That year, he led the league in ERA, strikeouts, and wins.
In 2024, Bieber made just two starts before undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery. He returned to the minor league mound in July and impressed scouts in recent outings.
Cleveland faced a tough decision with Bieber entering his final year of team control. The Guardians, battling injuries and inconsistency, opted to move their ace now rather than risk losing him in free agency.
The trade signals a retooling effort while keeping the team competitive in a tight AL Central race.
Bieber leaves Cleveland with a 62-32 record, a 3.18 ERA, and two All-Star nods. He also helped lead the team to the postseason in 2020 and 2022.
Toronto hopes Bieber will bolster its rotation for a playoff push. The Blue Jays, 64-46, are currently tied for the most wins in the American League.
