The Cleveland Guardians have traded All-Star second baseman Andres Gimenez to the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Guardians initially acquired infielder Spencer Horwitz, but traded him to the Pittsburg Pirates for right-hander Luis Ortiz and left-handers Michael Kennedy and Josh Hartle.

From ESPN:

Kennedy and Hartle were the No. 15- and 17-ranked prospects in Pittsburgh’s farm system, respectively, according to MLB.com.

The Guardians also sent right-hander Nick Sandlin to the Blue Jays in the trade and acquired minor league outfielder Nick Mitchell.

The Guardians’ choice to move on from Gimenez was shocking for Cleveland fans. The 26-year-old’s contract doesn’t expire until 2029. Considered one of baseball’s best infielders, Gimenez won 3 Gold Gloves with Cleveland.

One commenter on the Guardians’ appreciation post for Gimenez on Instagram read, “This is absolutely terrible. I am so heartbroken.”

Another said, “This makes NO SENSE WHATSOEVER! My love for our team has been diminished by one of the 3 BEST PLAYERS on it! Great guy, teammate, and talent! Fan FAVORITE! Stupid move by front office! Andres…. You will be missed more than you know!⚾️💔”

The Guardians will play their first spring training against the Cincinnati Reds on Feb. 22. The first game of the regular season for 2025 will be played on the road against the Kansas City Royals on March 27.
