All Deborah and Kenneth Boyd were looking for was an undeveloped lot to build a vacation home on.

Instead, the couple finds themselves at the center of an ugly racial attack that has shocked the small community of Lebanon in central Tennessee.

Just days away from closing the sale on an undeveloped parcel of land, the couple found a drawing of a man hanging from a noose and a racial slur drawn on the property’s entrance.

Though authorities report that hate crimes are down in the state this year, Ron Hooten, a Lebanon resident, reported that another racial slur was painted near the entrance of the subdivision in April, before the Boyds had visited the site. He said that he painted it over.
