Fire crews from multiple departments remain on scene after a massive fire destroyed part of downtown Garrettsville in Portage County.
Several buildings have been engulfed by flames which continue to burn. Fire officials say 13 businesses were destroyed by the fire.
Fire officials received the first call for help around 1: 15 p.m. The caller said, “Main Street is on fire.”
It appears the fire started at the corner of Center and Main Streets and has spread to 4 adjoining buildings — all the way to the corner of High and Main Streets.
As many as 34 fire departments from Geauga and Portage counties have responded to the scene. Many of those departments were part of a water shuttle to help fight the blaze.
The city’s water system couldn’t handle the demand from all the responding fire crews. While parts of the city have no water, other parts are still in service.
