1. MISSING PLANE
Adding up: The underwater drone looking for Malaysia Airlines flight 370 dipped into the ocean today for a fifth time in its hunt for the missing plane. So far, nothing of consequence has been found. While Bluefin-21 has just barely gotten started scanning the deep, the costs are adding up. Australia’s top transport official says a prolonged undersea search could cost nearly a quarter of a billion U.S. dollars if private companies are used.
2. SOUTH KOREA FERRY
Little progress: The death toll from a sunken ferry boat off the coast of South Korea rose to 28 today. And even though rescue workers have managed to breach the hull, hopes of finding the roughly 270 people still missing dimmed further when the entire boat became submerged. Hopes for survival center largely on passengers finding air pockets to breath in. Air is being pumped into the hull. Fierce winds and rough waters are complicating efforts.
3. KANSAS CITY HIGHWAY SHOOTER
Suspect in custody: Police have made an arrest in those highway shootings around the Kansas City area, up to 20 of them over the last couple of months. The suspect hasn’t been named yet, but a news conference is scheduled for this morning. Residents are breathing a bit easier now and not taking the long way around to avoid areas where the shootings had been reported.
