Fans of chicken wings — a bar food classic — are in for a treat on Wednesday. Every year July 29 is National Chicken Wing Day, a holiday first proclaimed in 1977 by then Mayor Stan Makowski of Buffalo, New York.

The buffalo wing was invented in 1964 at Anchor Bar in Buffalo after the owner tossed the usual scrap food in the deep fryer and coated them in butter mixed with hot sauce. While the traditional buffalo wing still follows that basic recipe, as time passed innumerable flavors for chicken wings emerged. “Whether you like them hot and spicy, sticky sweet or plain Jane and whether your prefer them served with blue cheese, plum sauce or celery sticks, chicken wings have to be the most versatile protein on the planet,” the National Chicken Wing Day website claims.
