News Talk Cleveland Featured Video

We recently had a chance to chat with John P. Kee as he prepares for the release of his new album, Level Next, . In our talk, he shared his position on staying relevant in the industry, being authentic to his own musicality and the importance of reaching back to mentor younger artists as an important part of his own ministry.

Check out the chat below!

EJ:  You are a pioneer in the industry but you’ve also maintained relevance throughout it. And you’ve done so by putting music out at your own pace… What lessons have you learned about staying relevant in this industry?

JPK: Relevance has to so much to do with substance. We have tons of music. God forbid, something happens to me tomorrow… I could still release albums from my personal opus because of the music I’ve recorded and produced… for up to 10-20 years from now.

When everybody else works on a project, they work on 10-12 songs. Let’s take [my] Legacy project for example … I want Legacy to almost be a series because instead of working on 12 songs, I did 31 songs because I got on the traditional vein and I kept on and kept on.
